Olopatadine Hydrochloride
Olopatadine is used to relieve itchiness in the eyes caused by allergic conjunctivitis.
Olopatadine is a histamine H1antagonist that suppresses the type 1 acute hypersensitivity reaction in vivo and in vitro, including suppression of histamine produced effects on human conjunctival epithelial cells. The alpha adrenergic, dopamine, and muscarinic type 1 and 2 receptors are all unaffected by olopatadine. Olopatadine was shown to have a minimal systemic exposure after topical ocular application in humans.
0.1 percent Sterile Eye Drops: Apply one drop to each afflicted eye twice a day, at a 6 to 8-hour interval.
One drop in the afflicted eye once a day with 0.2 percent sterile eye drops.
One drop in each afflicted eye once a day with 0.7 percent sterile eye drops.
May result in additive CNS depression with CNS depressants.
Olopatadine Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution is not recommended for people who have a known allergy to the drug.
Headaches have been found to affect 7% of people. Asthenia, blurred vision, burning or stinging, cold syndrome, dry eye, foreign body feeling, hyperemia, hypersensitivity, keratitis, lid edema, nausea, pharyngitis, pruritus, rhinitis, sinusitis, and taste distortion have all been recorded in fewer than 5% of patients.
There are no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal studies are not always predictive of human responses, this drug should be used in pregnant women only if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
It is not known whether topical ocular administration could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in the human breast milk. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised when Olopatadine Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution is administered to a nursing mother.
Contact lens irritation should not be treated with olopatadine HCl ophthalmic solution. Soft contact lens wearers should be told to wait at least ten minutes after injecting Olopatadine Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution before putting their lenses in.
