Mupirocin
Mupirocin ointment is used to treat impetigo (skin disorders) caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also used to treat folliculitis and furunculosis.
Mupirocin is an antibiotic that occurs naturally. The bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens is used in the fermentation of this antibiotic agent. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including methicillin-resistant forms of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, which cause the majority of skin infections. It is also effective against gram-negative bacteria including E. coli and Haemophilus influenzae. Mupirocin suppresses bacterial protein synthesis by binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase in a reversible and selective manner.
A small amount of Bactropen ointment should be applied to the affected area 3 times daily for up to 10 days. The safety and effectiveness of Mupirocin ointment have been established in the age range of 2 months to 16 years.
There have been no reports of medication interactions with Mupirocin ointment.
Individuals having a history of hypersensitivity responses to Mupirocin or any of the preparation's components should avoid using the medication.
The most commonly reported adverse effects include burning, stinging, or discomfort, itching, and rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, soreness, edema, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.
Animal reproduction tests using Mupirocin ointment found no evidence of fetal damage. Because there is no scientific data on its usage during pregnancy, Mupirocin ointment should be used only when the potential benefits outweigh the risks of therapy.
It is uncertain if this medication is excreted in human milk. Because many medications are secreted in human milk, care should be used while administering Mupirocin ointment to a breastfeeding mother.
Mupirocin ointment should not be used on the eyes or in the nose. Prolonged use of antibacterial products, like other antibacterial agents, may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungus. When using Mupirocin on the face, take care not to get it in your eyes. This is not appropriate for use with cannulae or at the site of central venous cannulation. If Mupirocin ointment causes sensitivity or severe skin irritation, use should be stopped and suitable alternate therapy for the infection initiated. Mixing Mupirocin ointment with other preparations increases the danger of dilution, resulting in a reduction in antibacterial effectiveness and probable loss of Mupirocin stability in the ointment.
