Cefixime is used to treat the following illnesses caused by susceptible strains of the specified microorganisms:
Cefixime is an oral semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic of the third generation. At easily attainable plasma concentrations, it is bactericidal against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative microorganisms. It kills bacteria by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall. In the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme, it is extremely stable. As a result of the presence of beta-lactamases, many organisms resistant to penicillins and certain cephalosporins may be sensitive to Cefixime. It is absorbed at a rate of 40% to 50% whether taken with or without meals.
The usual course of treatment is 7 days. This may be continued for up to 14 days depending on the severity of the infection.
Adult and children over 12 years: The recommended adult dose is 200-400 mg (1 to 2 capsules) daily, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses. For the treatment of uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonococcal infections, a single oral dose of Cefixime 400 mg is recommended.
Children (6 month or older): Usually 8 mg/kg/day given as a single dose or in two divided doses or may be given as following
Children (under 6 month): The safety and efficacy of Cefixime has not been established in children aged less than 6 months.
Carbamazepine: Using carbamazepine concurrently raises the carbamazepine level. Concurrent use of warfarin and other anticoagulants raises prothrombin time.
It is not recommended if you are allergic to Cefixime or other cephalosporins.
The medication is typically well tolerated. The most prevalent adverse effects are diarrhoea and stool alterations, which have been linked to larger dosages. Nausea, stomach discomfort, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence, headache, and dizziness are some of the other adverse effects. There have been reports of allergic reactions such as rash, pruritus, urticaria, drug fever, and arthralgia. When the treatment was stopped, these responses typically faded.
However, no appropriate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women exist. Because animal reproduction studies aren't usually predictive of human response, this medication should only be taken during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Cefixime is not known to be excreted in human milk. As a result, when Cefixime is provided to a nursing mother, extreme caution should be taken.
Individuals having a history of gastrointestinal illness, particularly colitis, should be recommended with caution. Patients with severely compromised renal function, as well as those undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, should be administered the medication with care. Only in severe renal failure (creatinine clearance 20 ml/min) is dosage modification required; in this situation, a dose of 200 mg once daily should not be exceeded.
