Potassium Citrate + Citric Acid
In the following situations, this preparation is recommended:
A stable and pleasant-tasting oral systemic alkalizer is potassium citrate and citric acid oral solution. As a systemic alkalizer, potassium citrate is absorbed and converted to potassium bicarbonate. In recommended doses, this substance alkalinizes the urine without causing a systemic alkalosis. Even when given for long periods of time, it is highly appetizing, pleasant tasting, and bearable. Potassium Citrate does not interfere with digestion or neutralize gastric juice.
To relieve discomfort in UTI:
Adults and children over 6 years: 10 ml 3 times daily, diluted with 1 glass of water.
Children 1-6 years: 5 ml 3 times daily, diluted with ½ glass of water.
To prevent kidney stones, With a uricosuric agent to prevent gout, Acidosis caused by kidney diseases:
Adults: 10-15 ml 4 times daily (or as directed by the physician) diluted with 1 glass of water.
Pediatric: 5-10 ml 4 times daily (or as directed by the physician) diluted with ½ glass of water.
Toxicity can occur when potassium-containing medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides are all taken at the same time.
In severe renal impairment with oliguria or azotemia, untreated Addison's disease, acute dehydration, significant cardiac injury, and hyperkalemia from any source, the medicine is contraindicated.
When given at recommended quantities to patients with normal renal function and urine output, this solution is generally well tolerated with no unpleasant side effects. To avoid hyperkalemia or alkalosis, as with any alkalinizing drug, caution should be required in certain patients with aberrant renal processes. Listlessness, weakness, mental disorientation, tingling of the extremities, and other symptoms linked with a high potassium concentration in the serum are all signs of potassium intoxication.
No information is available regarding the use of this drug during pregnancy and lactation.
In patients with limited urine output, the solution should be administered with caution. To reduce the risk of gastrointestinal harm associated with the oral administration of concentrated potassium salt formulations, it should be diluted thoroughly with water and taken after meals. In the presence of renal impairment, large dosages can produce hyperkalemia and alkalosis.
