Aspirin

 

Indications

Aspirin is indicated for the following indications

• Prevention of arterial occlusive events: myocardial infarction, myocardial infarction, post-bridging, acute ischemic stroke/TIA.
• Mild to moderate pain: Headache, muscle pain, menstrual pain, and toothache, etc.
• Chronic disease with pain and inflammation: Osteoarthritis.
• Antipyretic: fever and flu.

 

Pharmacology

By reducing platelet aggregation, aspirin inhibits thrombus formation on the arterial side of the circulation, where the thrombus is formed by platelet aggregation and anticoagulants have little effect. Aspirin is the analgesic of choice for the treatment of headaches, transient musculoskeletal pain, and dysmenorrhea. It has anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties, which can be helpful. Enteral aspirin relieves intestinal disorders and gastrointestinal ulcers caused by aspirin.

 

Dosage & Administration

Pain, inflammatory diseases, and as antipyretic: Aspirin 300 mg 1-3 tablets 6 hourly with a maximum daily dose of 4 gm.

Suspected acute coronary syndrome: 150 mg-300 mg immediately unless there are clear contraindications.

After myocardial infarction: Aspirin 150 mg daily for 1 month. Long-term use of aspirin in a dose of 75 mg daily is recommended thereafter.

Acute ischaemic stroke/Transient ischaemic stroke (TIA): The starting dose is 150 mg-300 mg daily and Aspirin 75 mg daily thereafter.

Following bypass surgery: 75 mg-300 mg daily starting 6 hours post-procedure.

 

Interaction

Salicylates may potentiate the effects of anticoagulants, oral hypoglycemic agents, phenytoin, and sodium valproate. They inhibit the uricosuric effect of probenecid and may increase the toxicity of sulfonamides. They can also induce bronchospasm or trigger asthma attacks in susceptible individuals.

 

Contraindications

Neospin 75 is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age (Reye's syndrome), breastfeeding, and active peptic ulcers. Hemophilia, intracranial hemorrhage, and other bleeding caused by ulcers are also contraindicated.

 

Side Effects

Side effects of regular aspirin doses are mild, including nausea, indigestion, gastrointestinal ulcers, and bronchospasm, etc.

 

Pregnancy & Lactation

It is especially important not to use aspirin during the third trimester of pregnancy unless directed by your doctor, as it can cause problems for the unborn baby or complications during delivery. Neospin 75 passes into breast milk. Therefore, it should be used with caution in nursing mothers.

 

Precautions & Warnings

It should be used with caution in patients with asthma, uncontrolled blood pressure, and pregnant women. Use caution in patients with nasal polyps and nasal allergies.
