Indications of Coralex Tablet

This medication is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tetany, hypoparathyroidism, and osteogenesis disorders. Also used as a supplement in cases of insufficient calcium intake in childhood nutrition, rickets, pregnancy and lactation, and geriatric people. Other uses include pancreatitis, phosphate binder in chronic renal failure, and so on.

Pharmacology of Coralex Tablet

This is a calcium and vitamin D3 supplement in which the calcium carbonate is derived from coral. The chemical structure of coral calcium carbonate is remarkably similar to the composition of human bone. Coral calcium is similar to other sources, however it is more absorbable. Vitamin D3 promotes calcium absorption from the GI tract and helps to maintain calcium homeostasis in the body.

Dosage & Administration of Coralex Tablet

One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician. Taking in full stomach ensures better absorption.

Interaction of Coralex Tablet

Oral calcium can decrease the absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations, thus a minimum of 3 hours should elapse between taking these drugs. Thiazide diuretics decrease calcium excretion in the kidney. Vitamin D3 metabolism may be induced by phenytoin, barbiturates, and glucocorticoids. Concurrent consumption of certain foods, such as spinach, cereals, milk and its derivatives, may decrease intestinal calcium absorption.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the components, hypocalcaemia caused by a vitamin D3 excess, hyperparathyroidism, bone metastases, severe renal insufficiency, severe hypercalciuria, renal calculi, and so on.

Side Effects of Coralex Tablet

Flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, upper GI pain, and other symptoms are uncommon. Hypercalcaemia caused by prolonged usage has only been recorded in a few cases.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This can be given to pregnant and nursing moms if their doctor recommends it.

Precautions & Warnings

In the case of moderate hypercalciuria, close monitoring and dosage decrease may be required. In cases of mild to severe renal impairment, as well as long-term usage, plasma and serum calcium levels should be monitored. Patients with kidney stones or a history of such stones should also take care.
