Acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease are among the conditions for which moxifloxacin is prescribed.
Moxifloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibacterial drugs, and it is a 4th generation synthetic broad spectrum antibacterial drug. It works against a wide range of bacteria, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae, that are gram-positive, gram-negative, anaerobic, and atypical. Topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, which are required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, are inhibited.
Acute bacterial sinusitis: 400 mg once a day for seven to ten days.
400 mg once daily for 5-10 days if you have a bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.
Pneumonia acquired in the community: 400 mg once daily for 7-14 days.
400 mg once daily for 7 days for uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.
Infections of the skin and skin structures: 400 mg once daily for 7-21 days.
When antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins, and multivalent cations are used together, moxifloxacin absorption is reduced (e.g. iron or zinc). With NSAIDs and warfarin, moxifloxacin may increase the risk of convulsions and bleeding. As a result, using Moxifloxacin with them at the same time should be avoided.
Patients who have a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients should avoid using this product.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and dizziness are all common Moxifloxacin side effects.
Pregnancy category C according to the US Food and Drug Administration. During pregnancy and lactation, moxifloxacin is not recommended.
Tendinitis and tendon rupture are possible side effects of moxifloxacin. If a tendon becomes inflamed or painful, it should be stopped. It should not be used in patients who have a known prolongation of the QT interval, hypokalemia that has not been corrected, or who are taking Class IA or Class III antiarrhythmics.
