Acute bacterial sinusitis, acute aggravation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease are among the conditions for which moxifloxacin is prescribed.
Moxifloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibacterial drugs, and it is a 4th generation synthetic broad spectrum antibacterial medication. It works against a wide spectrum of bacteria, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae, that are gram-positive, gram-negative, anaerobic, and atypical. Topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, which are required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, are inhibited.
Acute bacterial sinusitis: 400 mg once daily 7-10 days.
Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400 mg once daily 5-10 days.
Community-acquired pneumonia: 400 mg once daily 7-14 days.
Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg once daily 7 days.
Complicated skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg once daily 7-21 days.
Complicated intra-abdominal infections: 400 mg once daily 5-14 days.
Pelvic inflammatory disease: 400 mg once daily 14 days.
Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution has not been subjected to drug-drug interaction studies. Moxifloxacin does not inhibit CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP1A2, according to in vitro studies, indicating that it is unlikely to affect the pharmacokinetics of drugs metabolized by these cytochrome P450 isozymes.
Moxifloxacin Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any of the components in this medication should not use the hydrochloride ophthalmic solution.
Conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing were the most commonly reported ocular adverse events. Approximately 1-6 percent of patients experienced these complications. Fever was one of the non-ocular adverse events reported at a rate of 1-4 percent.
Because no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have been conducted, Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.
Prolonged use of anti-infectives, like other antibiotics, can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi. If superinfection occurs, stop using it and seek alternative treatment. When clinical judgment dictates, the patient should be examined under magnification, such as slit lamp biomicroscopy, and fluorescein staining, if appropriate.
