Fexofenadine Hydrochloride

 

Indications

Axodin is suitable for alleviating symptoms related to seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children. It is also suitable for the treatment of simple skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria.

 

Pharmacology

Fexofenadine hydrochloride is an antihistamine with selective peripheral H1 receptor antagonist activity. is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, reaching maximum blood concentration in 23 hours. Does not appear to cross the blood-brain barrier

 

Dosage & Administration

Seasonal allergic rhinitis

adults and children under 12 years old: 

  Tablets: 60 mg twice a day or 120 mg once a day or 180 mg once a day 
  In case of renal failure: 60 mg 

a day Children 6 to 11 years old : 

  Tablets: 30 mg twice a day or 60 mg once a day 
  In case of renal failure: 30 mg once a day 

Children aged 2 to 11 years 

 Suspension: 30 mg twice a day or 5 ml 
 In In case of renal failure: 30 mg or 5 ml once a day

Chronic idiopathic urticaria

adults and children 12 years and older: 

 Tablets: 60 mg twice a day or 120 mg once a day or 180 mg once a day 
 Renal failure: 

60 mg per day Children 6 to 11 years old: 

 Tablets: 30 mg twice a day or 60 mg once a day 
 In case of renal failure: 30 mg once a day 

Children from 6 months to under 2 years: 

 Suspension: 15 mg or 2.5 ml (1/ 2 teaspoons) twice a day

 In case of renal failure: 15 mg or 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon) once a day 

Children 2 to 11 years old: 
  Suspension: 30 mg or 5 ml (1 teaspoon) twice a day a day

 If kidney failure: 30 mg or 5 ml (1 teaspoon) once a day

 

Interaction

When combined with erythromycin or ketoconazole, the plasma concentration of fexofenadine hydrochloride increases. Antacids containing aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can reduce the absorption of Axodin.

 

Contraindications

Patients known to be allergic to fexofenadine hydrochloride or any of its components are contraindicated.

 

Side Effects

Common side effects are headache, fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth and gastrointestinal disorders.

 

Pregnancy & Lactation

The US FDA classifies fexofenadine hydrochloride pregnancy as C. Therefore, fexofenadine hydrochloride should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless the potential benefit to the other party outweighs the possible risk to the fetus.

 

Precautions & Warnings

Elderly patients and patients with impaired renal function should be used with caution.
