Indications

Fenofibrate is used to treat hyperlipidemias of type lla, llb, III, IV, and V in people who haven't responded well to diet and other treatments.

 

Pharmacology

Fibric acid derivative fenofibrate. After oral ingestion, fenofibrate is rapidly hydrolyzed to its pharmacologically active form, fenofibric acid. Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-lipoprotein B, total triglycerides, and VLDL cholesterol are all reduced by fenofibric acid. Furthermore, Fenofibrate treatment causes an increase in HDL and apo-proteins apoAI apoAII. Fenofibrate.

 

Administration & Dosage

The initial dose of Fenofibrate for adult patients with hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia is 200 mg per day.
The initial dose for adult patients with hypertriglyceridemia is 67 to 200 mg per day.
Individualize the dose based on the patient's response. Fenofibrate should be taken with a meal to maximize the medication's bioavailability.

 

Interaction

Warfarin's anticoagulant effects have been reported to be potentiated by fenofibrate. It may improve glucose tolerance and have an additive effect when combined with an anti-diabetic drug. Cyclosporine nephrotoxicity may be increased by fenofibrate.

 

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Fenofibrate, severe renal or hepatic impairment, existing gall bladder disease, breast-feeding mothers, and photosensitivity to ketoprofen are all contraindications to taking Fenofibrate.

 

Side Effect

Myotoxicity (nausea, anorexia, gastric pain), pruritus, urticaria, impotence, as well as headache, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue, and hair loss.

 

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnant women should avoid taking fenofibrate.

 

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with renal disease should be given extra attention because progressive increases in serum creatinine concentration or failure to follow dosage guidelines can lead to myotoxicity; discontinue if myotoxicity is suspected or if creatinine kinase concentration rises significantly. For the first year, liver function tests are recommended every three months.
