Doxycycline Hydrochloride is indicated in the following infections caused by susceptible microorganisms:
Doxycycline hydrochloride is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity. It is mainly a bacteriostatic antibiotic. Its activity spectrum is similar to other tetracyclines, but it is especially active against Staphylococcus aureus and Nocardia. The drug is usually active against penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains and these microbial strains resistant to other tetracyclines. Certain Gram-negative E. coli strains. Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella, which are often resistant to tetracycline, can be sensitive to doxycycline. Furthermore, 7090% of various anaerobic bacteria are sensitive to doxycycline, and Bacteroides fragilis is more sensitive to doxycycline than other tetracyclines.
Doxycycline is active against most strains of Haemophilus influenzae, especially suitable for Haemophilus dubriella, Actinomyces, Brucella, and Vibrio cholerae infections. It is also effective against Nocardia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and many types of Rickettsia. Doxycycline is active on spirochetes, such as Borrelia rotunda, Treponema pallidum and Treponema pallidum. It is also active against Plasmodium falciparum.
Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days.
Severe infections (including refractory urinary tract infections): 200 mg daily for 10 days.
Acne: 100 mg daily.
Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days (14-21 days in pelvic inflammatory disease).
Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing.
Antacids and iron-containing preparations that contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium can affect the absorption of tetracyclines. Bismuth salicylate also affects the absorption of tetracycline. Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin can reduce the half-life of doxycycline. Simultaneous use of tetracycline can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Patients receiving anticoagulant therapy may need to reduce the dose of anticoagulant. It is recommended to avoid taking tetracyclines with penicillin.
Patients who have exhibited hypersensitivity to any of the tetracyclines should avoid taking Doxycycline. Doxycycline is not recommended for children under the age of eight. It is also not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rashes, hemolytic anaemia, eosinophilia may be reported.
Doxycycline should be avoided by pregnant women due to the potential of staining and a negative impact on the foetus' bone formation. Doxycyclines pass into breast milk, thus moms who are taking them should not nurse their babies.
The use of tetracyclines during tooth development (the second half of pregnancy, infancy and childhood up to 8 years of age) can cause permanent tooth discoloration. Therefore, tetracyclines should not be used in this age group.
