Indications of Doximar 200

Doximar" is indicated for the treatment of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), bronchial asthma and bronchospasm.

Pharmacology

The drug doxophylline is a brand-new bronchodilator. The inclusion of a dioxolane group in position 7 distinguishes it from Theophylline structurally. Doxophylline relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by inhibiting phosphodiesterase 4 specifically. However, differently from Theophylline, Doxophylline appears to have decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors, This could explain why the medication has a superior safety profile. Doxophylline has been shown to suppress platelet activating factor (PAF) production as well as the creation of leukotrienes. 

 

Dosage and administration

Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily.

Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily or as prescribed by the physician.

Children:

• >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily.
• 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily, i.e. if body weight is 10 kg, 3 ml (60 mg) two times daily or as prescribed by the physician.

If required daily dose of Doxophylline is 400 mg then Doxophylline SR tablet to be taken once daily or as prescribed by the physician

 

Interaction of Doximar 200

Doxofylline should not be administered together with other xanthine derivatives, including beverages and foods containing caffeine. Toxic synergism with ephedrine has been documented for xanthines. Concomitant therapy with erythromycin, troleandomycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, propranolol and anti-flu vaccine may decrease the hepatic clearance of xanthines causing an increase in blood levels.

 

Contraindications

Doxofylline is contraindicated in patients with hypotension & acute myocardial infarction. It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Doxofylline or any of components.

 

Side Effects of Doximar 200

The most common side effects include headache, irritability, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, insomnia, abdominal pain, heart burn, shortening of breath, contractions, proteinuria and hyperglycemia.

 

Pregnancy & Lactation

Animal reproduction studies indicate that Doxofylline does not cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant animals nor can affect reproduction capacity. However, since there is limited experience in humans during pregnancy, Doxofylline should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit of mother justifies the potential risk of the fetus. Doxofylline is contraindicated in lactating mother.

 

Precautions & Warnings

A number of known variables influence the half-life of xanthine derivatives. Patients with liver illness, congestive heart failure, and those on certain other treatments such as erythromycin, troleandomycin, lincomycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, propanolol, and anti-flu vaccine may experience a delay. In these circumstances, a lower Doxophylline dose may be required. Smoking, phenytoin, and other anticonvulsants may cause an increase in clearance and a shorter mean half-life. In these circumstances, greater Doxophylline doses may be required.
