Lansoprazole is prescribed for the following conditions:
Lansoprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that is also known as a PPI owing to its ability to inhibit the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in the gastric parietal cell and hence impede the final phase of acid production. Basal and stimulated acid are both inhibited.
Lansoprazole appears to be a selective inhibitor of the cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase system; there may be an influence on hepatic clearance, but no clinically significant interactions have been reported to far. There is significant ambiguity about Lansoprazole's impact on the oral combination contraceptive pill. A second round of evaluation is under underway. Physiological effects similar to those seen with Omeprazole are expected to occur because to the decrease in gastric acid, which is likely to impact bacterial colonization of the stomach and duodenum as well as vitamin B12 absorption.
Lansoprazole is not recommended for people who have a history of hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
Severe or permanent side effects: Carcinoid tumors may be induced by severe acid suppression, and serum gastrin levels may increase. Serum gastrin levels rise over the first three months of therapy and thereafter stabilize, but at a lower level than in pernicious anaemia. In individuals with Helicobacter pylori infection, long-term therapy with a proton pump inhibitor may hasten the development of atrophic gastritis.
Symptomatic side effect: Dose-dependent diarrhoea occurs at a rate of around 4% at 30 mg per day, increasing to 8% at 60 mg per day. Headache affects 2-3% of all treated people.
Unless there are strong reasons, lansoprazole should be avoided during pregnancy.
Gastric cancer should be checked out. Impairment of the liver. Lactation and pregnancy
Keep at 25° C.
